PolyU Institute for Entrepreneurship
In pursuit of knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship, the Institute for Entrepreneurship (IfE) of PolyU was established to serve as an important platform between academics and business. By harnessing the expertise and resources of the University, IfE fosters and enables entrepreneurship development, supports industry innovations, and strengthens the competitive edge of enterprises in the global marketplace.
Located in The Jockey Club Innovation Tower on the PolyU campus as well as the PolyU Shenzhen Base in the Nanshan District in Shenzhen, PolyU InnoHub was established in March 2017 as a strategic initiative to further develop PolyU’s leading position in driving innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. It aims to build a regional partnership network to foster start-ups exchange and mutual soft landings, and to facilitate multi-disciplinary cross-sector collaborations and co-creations to advance knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship in the region.

Chen Yi Ming
Head of Management Committee of Entrepreneurship Park, Shenzhen University
Dr Chen has extensive experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. Being the Head of Management Committee of Shenzhen University Entrepreneurship Park, he devoted his knowledge in boosting the entrepreneurial ecosystem and constructing incubation platform in the University, by bring in numerous well-known enterprises and celebrities for efficient nurture of start-ups and integrating faculties/ departments resources. Dr Chen is actively promoting integration of government, production, finance, education and research.
With the honourary title of "Shenzhen Advanced Educator", Dr Chen was one of the first batch of Ministry of Education Outstanding Mentors in innovation and entrepreneurship in 2016.
Head of Incubation Programme, HKSTP
Peter Mok is the Head of Incubation and Acceleration Programmes, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation. He has extensive experience in sales and marketing of technology products, corporate merger and acquisition, venture capital investment and C-Level executive recruitment. Peter is one of Directors and also responsible for the secretariat office of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network. Peter holds a BA(Hons) degree from HKU, an LL.B (Hons) from the University of London and an MBA from CUHK.
Director of Business Development, Physical Sciences, T3 – Technion Technology Transfer, Technion R&D Foundation
Dr. Gabriel Shemer serves as a Director of Business Development for the Physical Sciences at the Technology Transfer Office of the Technion- Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel. Dr. Shemer’s responsibilities span all commercialization stages from project identification, IPR strategy, positioning, scouting for potential investments and industry partners; marketing and negotiations of license agreements. Gabriel works closely with entrepreneurs, technological incubators, investors and multinational companies. Prior to joining T3, Gabriel was a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, developing nanotechnology-based tools for DNA sequencing. As a fellow at UPenn’s Tech Transfer Office he assessed the commercial potential of new technologies invented by the university’s scientists. Prior to that, he performed research at the Weizmann Institute of Science focusing on dense gene phases on biochips. Dr. Shemer holds a PhD in Chemistry (cum laude) from Tel-Aviv University and an MBA from the Technion.
General Manager, Techcode Shenzhen
Alex has extensive experience in medical sciences by devoting his knowledge in Yangzijiang Pharmaceutical Group (the largest drug manufacturer in the country), Taizhou Medical New & Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone (the only national biopharmaceutical industrial development zone in China) and China Food and Drug Administration.
Serving as the General Manager of Biopharmaceutical Industry and then the General Manager of Shenzhen Incubator since he joined Techcode in December 2014, Alex successfully built a state-level co-creation space. Under his leadership, Techcode has already incubated 85 start-ups with more than 70 patents applied. The performance of the supported start-ups are encouraging, with 58% of them secured investment/ further funding, 72% received sales orders and 48% realised profits.
Alex holds a Master of Microbiology and Biochemical Pharmacy from Academy of Military Medical Sciences.
Director of Internal Operations, Hong Kong X-Tech Startup Platform
PhD of HKU (Computational Chemistry), Master and Bachelor of Nankai University, experienced in computational chemistry/ biology and material simulations. Worked in HKU as Research Officer and the Project Manager of Area of Excellence on “Theory, Modeling, and Simulation of Emerging Electronics” (funding: 150M HKD).

Dr Alwin Wong, a Registered Technology Transfer Professional, is a key driver overseeing university-wide knowledge transfer initiatives, addressing needs and interest in technology commercialization, innovation and entrepreneurship.
At the Institute for Entrepreneurship, we advocate "do well, do good" entrepreneurial character and skill set development for the young. Such competence and philosophy is best acquired via hands-on programs like the PolyU Micro Fund and other follow-on support schemes whereby young start-ups are provided with both financial and nurturing support. Related partnering programs have been extended to both local and regional intermediaries, funding agencies, and angel investors.
For professional services, Dr Wong currently serves as secretary-general of the International Strategic Technology Alliance; co-chair of international strategy for the Australian-Asian region for the Association of University Technology Managers; an assessor in an Innovation and Technology Fund Research Projects Assessment Sub-Panel; Consultant to The Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries and The Professional Validation Centre of Hong Kong Business Sector.

Senior Director, NUS Enterprise, National University of Singapore
Prof. Wong teaches Entrepreneurship and Innovation Strategy at the NUS Business School. As Director of the NUS Entrepreneurship Centre, he spearheads the university’s entrepreneurship education and outreach programmes, as well as oversees the NUS Enterprise Incubator (NEI) which provided incubation, seed funding and mentorship to NUS spin-offs and start-ups in Singapore, Silicon Valley, China and India. Prof. Wong obtained his PhD from MIT.

Dr Yen is the Managing Partner of Radiant Tech Ventures Ltd., a Hong Kong based investment firm licensed by the Securities and Futures Commission for Type 9 (asset management) regulated activity. He has over 25 years of financial and management experience in private and listed companies involving cross-border investments, global supply chain, manufacturing and infrastructure businesses. He has been involved in innovation and technology investments since the late 1990s through managing corporate and venture capital fund investments as well as investments as angel investor in transactions involving startups from the Hong Kong, Mainland China, Israel and the United States.
Prior to establishing Radiant Tech Ventures, Dr Yen co-founded Radiant Venture Capital Limited and built it into one of the most active venture capital firms based in Hong Kong. He is currently serving as board member of several startups in USA, Hong Kong and Israel, Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network, independent non-executive director of Hopewell Holdings Ltd. (SEHK: 0054), and non-executive director of Fountain Set (Holdings) Ltd. (SEHK: 0420).
Dr Yen has previously served as an advisory committee member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council for Information & Communications Technology Services, an independent non-executive director of Hopewell Highway Infrastructure Ltd., a founding board member of the Supply Chain Council Greater China Chapter, as well as the Board of Directors and Technology Committee of Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel, a government funded industry-focused research institutes in Hong Kong. Dr Yen graduated magna cum laude from Boston University, United States with a Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering
and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from McGill University, Canada and a Doctor of Business Administration degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong.

Aiming to help makeup artists expanding their network and building up portfolio, MUA also offers various services including makeup job posting, makeup skill workshops, cosmetics product sampling, second-hand tool exchange and photo-shooting events.
Novel Fineries is an advocate of heritage arts and a driving force for social change. The brand collaborates with artisans to create wearable arts with long-lasting traditional techniques. Each collection gives rise to a craft that was trivialised in time and aims to tell the story about the enduring process and people behind.
WeLife Design develops Tablet Tailor, a self-help pattern drafting tool that enables designers to translate their ideas into patterns by incorporating digital and analog processes. It consists of a mobile app featuring three textile craft tools including sewing, pattern making, and weaving, and a specially-designed projector. The app is also featured with a cloud-based pattern library and a makers’ social network, nurturing fashion talents and supporting small textile businesses.
HKSTP-PolyU Tech Incubation Fund (TIF) Scheme 2017-18
Aiming to improve reading fluency for those with dyslexia, Easiread is a prototype typography system with pre-set functions enabling personalised reading settings on online text so that the users with reading difficulties can read independently and efficiently. At a later stage Easiread targets to support more languages and to include features like Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for printed books.
eSight Technology focuses on machine vision and AI technologies for industrial robots. With machine vision modules and controlling software supported by its proprietary algorithm library and motion control integration technologies, eSight helps enterprises to enter the new era of smart manufacturing.
JabJabX is a pioneer in Kung Fu technology, a game changer in the world of martial arts that facilitates “train hard and train smart”. Using artificial intelligence, cloud computing and activity recognition, user’s training data can be captured, recorded and analysed through wearable device and mobile app. JabJabX makes training a fun, effective and quantifiable experience, enabling historical results tracking, progress monitoring and competition over the digital arena of Kickboxing and Kung Fu.
PolyU Tech Launchpad Fund (TLF) Scheme 2017-18
Logflows (previously called 36Link) is a cloud-based, all-in-one platform to digitise the traditional B2B trucking industry. This logistics workflow management platform offers a full range of logistics business tools, including order taking, artificial intelligence dispatcher, reporting dashboard, auto-billing and reconciliation, e-tender and more. The platform will significantly improve efficiency of the logistics company staff, drivers and even management.
Innoplay developed PANO360, a supplemental tool for smartphones, GoPro, DSLRs, selfie sticks and webcams to capture stable panoramic images and time lapse videos. Equipped with wireless access, application algorithms, Bluetooth technology, real time stitching and compression technology, the PANO360 offers promising results for high quality photos and videos.
Pokeguide is a mobile app that provides MTR platforms and exits information for walking route planning. In this app, the user can find the shortest path from the platform to the escalator and exit, allowing them to board the train, transit to another line and enter the station more efficiently. The app also recommends leisure activities, appealing cuisine and shopping discounts along MTR lines.
Chears Hearing Aid
STEFG-PolyU China Entrepreneurship Fund 2017
Chears Hearing is a hearing aid app which turns a mobile phone and Bluetooth earbuds into a high-performance hearing aid with proprietary noise cancellation and speech enhancement technologies. Despite the many advantages in voice processing, smart phones can hardly outperform hearing aids due to background noise and transmission latency. A new algorithm is developed by Chears to solve the above two problems, bringing a highly cost-effective alternative hearing aid for the hearing impaired.

Adopting design thinking to the process of cultural preservation, by means of interviews, video recording, exhibitions, workshops, etc., the Company works with the local people to find out the most meaningful and memorial moments in their history, tradition and daily life as a silhouette of cultural heritage in the modern life. They also organise local activities to strengthen emotional connections, thereby raising public awareness and revitalising the cultural atmosphere. A digital platform will also be developed to share what they are doing to facilitate online and offline interactions, hoping to arouse broader interest.

High-efficiency, high-power-density wind and solar power generation controllers are developed for small and medium-sized wind and solar power systems. By offering technological upgrades, the Company focuses on developing cost-effective engineering solutions for energy equipment companies and continues to R&D higher-performance energy conversion and storage products.
Near Infrared (NIR) Spectrometer for Food Safety Testing
Shenzhen VaryVision Embedded Devise Co., Limited is a computer vision embedded module designer and system supplier. With the proprietary vision analyser module and NIR spectroscopy collector, a handheld NIR spectrometer for real-time food safety analysis is developed, enabling inspectors to detect whether the cooking oil is up to a specific quality standard on site. The NIR spectrometer can also analyse molecular composition in quality and quantity of the sample, backed up with spectral database and a self-improving pattern recognition algorithm supported by machine-learning.
Smart Diving Mask "Mirage"
Sightecho is developing the world's first smart diving mask "Mirage", enhanced by augmented reality for both safety and fun. All the life-saving information such as depth, time remaining and air consumption is displayed in the diver’s line of sight using a transparent near-eye-display. Divers can also send signals to nearby divers through the mask display, greatly improving the diving experience. The future products in the pipeline include skiing goggles and bicycle helmets.
With patented PolyU technologies in artificial intelligence and 3D modelling, TOZI aims to bring technical revolution to the fashion industry by enabling instant 3D body modelling, virtual try-on, auto pattern making and smart manufacture of “make-to-fit” garments. “1Measure”, the world’s first smart body measuring app, can measure over 100 body size measurements in seconds based on two mobile snapshots of the user. TOZI currently works with a number of 4.0 smart factories to provide a fully automated high-end bespoke service (named as “衣呼” in WeChat), which enables the customers to pick their perfect-fit clothing at their fingertips.

PolyU Lean Launchpad Programme 2018 Pilot (Fashion & Wearable Technology)
Residual torque (or twist liveliness) resulting from the commonly-used ring-spinning technique in yarn production has been a major cause for spirality and distortion of single jersey knitted fabrics, and surface unevenness of denim fabric after stone-wash finishing. Nu-Torque™ technology is a major breakthrough to solve this problem to produce singles ring yarns with zero or low residual torque and high strength. By incorporating the NuTorque™ device into the conventional ring-spinning process, yarn manufacturers can see substantial increase in yarn productivity, distinctive quality improvements of textiles and garments, as well as significant energy saving in production.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (滑鼠手) is the most common upper extremity compressive neuropathy, especially in the group of females over the age of 40. In severe cases, neurosurgery is required and it is uncomfortable, painful and costly. Our solution, Smart Wristband, is a highly sensitive fabric sensor connected with smart phone which can record the wrist motion and warn the users when they use incorrect positions. Further applications include motion monitoring in piano players, racket sports players and other groups with a danger of occupational health risks.
